The Beatles released a double A-side single with the songs “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” in 1967. The single was the first taste of new Beatles music after the band retired from touring and enjoyed a lengthy hiatus from recording. Both songs were originally recorded during the sessions for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band but not included on the album. The single was the first by The Beatles since “Love Me Do” not to hit #1 in the UK charts (it debuted at #2).
