Happy Memorial Day!

In 1967, John Lennon starred in the comedy film How I Won the War, which was shot in Almeria, Spain, during a break in The Beatles’ schedule. Lennon played Musketeer Gripweed, and the movie was centered around a British platoon fighting in World War II.

Following his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, John Lennon officially changed his middle name to Ono. His given middle name was previously Winston.

Happy Birthday Julian Lennon!

Julian Lennon, the only son of John Lennon and his first wife Cynthia, was born in Liverpool on April 8th, 1963.  Julian became close with Paul McCartney, who wrote the song “Hey Jude” about the boy. Lennon became a musician in his own right, having a hit single with the song “Too Late for Goodbyes” in the 1980s.

Give Peace a Chance

John Lennon’s first solo single was “Give Peace a Chance”, which was recorded live with a large crowd of people. The song was originally credited to Lennon-McCartney. Many believe this was done as a thank you to Paul McCartney for helping Lennon write and record the Beatles’ hit “The Ballad of John & Yoko.”

“Woman” is a love song written by John Lennon that appeared on his final studio album Double Fantasy. It was the second single released from the album, and the first Lennon single issued after his death on December 8, 1980.

David Bowie’s hit song “Fame” was co-written with John Lennon, and released as a single in 1975. The pair met while Bowie was staying in New York City, which resulted in the writing and recording of the track. The song eventually reached #1.

Cold Turkey

John Lennon wrote “Cold Turkey” when attempting to kick his then-current addiction to heroin. The song was presented to The Beatles as a potential new single during the Abbey Road sessions. It was rejected and subsequently released by Lennon and his Plastic Ono Band as a single in 1969.

RIP John Lennon

John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980, in front of the entrance of the Dakota building, Lennon’s New York City home. Chapman shot Lennon in the back 4 times as the singer was walking into his apartment.

December 8, 2010 marks the 30th Anniversary of Lennon’s death. RIP John Lennon.
